Guides¶
Guides collects the docs site's core reading paths, from foundational concepts through specific tools and situations, plus full translations of external research. Each layer has its own index listing everything in it.
Four Layers¶
-
The thinking tools behind anonymity and privacy: clarifying the vocabulary, building a threat model, metadata, how platforms collect data, what surveillance can currently do, maintaining multiple identities, networked freedom, anonymous payments, end-to-end encryption, and the networks often mistaken for anonymity. Start here for the shared vocabulary.
-
Introductions and comparisons: Tor, Tails, OONI, CryptPad, OnionShare, GrapheneOS, messaging tools, password managers, the cryptocurrency privacy spectrum, and the data risks of AI services.
-
Situations and roles: an everyday baseline, journalists, activists, domestic violence survivors, LGBTQ+ people, election observers, anonymous donations, travel and border crossing, and speaking on Mainland Chinese platforms.
-
External research reports, indexed with links to the English originals and our full Traditional Chinese translations.
How to Use Them¶
There is no need to read all four in order. Several ways in:
- You want to know what to do and can read the reasoning later: start with an everyday baseline, ordered by actual effect
- First time with anonymity networks: start with Concepts and read through for the vocabulary and the motivation
- Looking for a specific tool: go straight to Tools for the introduction and the threat model each one addresses
- You have a specific situation: find the closest role in Scenarios and read the whole workflow
- You want external research: Translated Reports indexes the reports and their originals

The protocols and cryptography behind these tools (post-quantum cryptography, decentralized website publishing, zero-knowledge identity and more) are written up for technical readers in the community site's Articles.
